Salvaged Vehicles

If you purchase a vehicle that is considered "salvaged" or "rebuilt" or "reconstructed" or a "total loss" by an insurance company, in order for the vehicle to be registered, you must:

  1. Verify that the vehicle qualifies as "salvaged" .
  2. Get temporary vehicle tags for DC Inspection at any DMV service location.
  3. Pass a vehicle inspection. Once a vehicle passes inspection, you will be given a certification for passed inspection.
  4. Bring your inspection certification, bill of sale, title with all relevant documents and proof of insurance to the 301 C Street, NW, DMV service location.
  5. Documents you submitted will be sent to the Auto Theft Unit for verification*. You will not be notified of the completion of the verification process by the Auto Theft Unit and will need to come in to DMV service location at 301 C Street, NW, in person to confirm the status of your salvaged vehicle.
  6. Once the Auto Theft Unit verifies your vehicle information, the paperwork will be submitted back to the DMV.
  7. Follow the process for "registering your vehicle." A "salvaged" vehicle is taxed on the fair market value as reflected by the The National Automobile Dealers Association (www.nada.com).

* Auto Theft Unit verification process usually takes at least 1 week to complete.
