Proof of Ability to Drive

You must provide at least 1 primary source document, as listed below, to satisfy proof of ability to drive. The primary source document must be original.

Any one of the following documents will be accepted:

  • US driver license, not expired for more than 90 days
  • Out-of-state certified driving record (issued within the last 30 days) showing a valid license, not expired for more than 90 days
  • Unexpired out-of-country driver license
  • Unexpired DC learner permit and successful completion of road skills test

NOTES

All applicants must also pass a vision test and satisfactorily address any medical issues that affect their ability to drive. Applicants with an unexpired out-of-country driver license must also take and pass the knowledge test.

Documents that are altered, counterfeit, torn, laminated, erased, whited out, etc., are not originals and are not accepted by DC DMV.
