Proof of Ability to Drive
You must provide at least one primary source document, as listed below, to satisfy proof of ability to drive.
Any one of the following documents will be accepted:
Primary Sources (one required) - must be original:
- US driver license, not expired for more than 90 days.
- Out-of-State certified driving record (issued within the last 30 days) showing a valid license, not expired for more than 90 days.
- Unexpired Out-of-Country driver license.
- Unexpired DC learner permit and successful completion of skills road test.
Note: All applicants must also pass an eye test and satisfactorily address any medical issues that affect the ability to drive. Applicants with an unexpired Out-of-Country driver license must also, take and pass the knowledge test.
Note: Documents which are altered, counterfeit, torn, laminated, erased, whited out, etc are not originals and are not accepted by DC DMV.
