Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Knowledge Tests

An individual seeking to obtain a CDL license must first take and pass all required knowledge tests. Listed below are the required knowledge tests for each CDL Class and endorsement.

Required Knowledge Tests for Class A

  • General Commercial
  • Combination
  • Airbrakes

Required Knowledge Tests for Class A endorsements

  • T – Double/Triple Trailers
  • P – Transport Passengers
  • S – School Bus
  • H – Hazardous Material
  • N – Tankers

Required Knowledge Tests for Class B

  • General Commercial
  • Airbrakes

Required Knowledge Tests for Class B endorsements

  • P – Transport Passengers
  • S – School Bus
  • H – Hazardous Material
  • N – Tankers

Required Knowledge Tests for Class C

  • General Commercial

Required Knowledge Tests for Class C endorsements

  • P – Transport Passengers
  • S – School Bus
  • H – Hazardous Material
  • N – Tankers

Endorsements for Hazardous Materials (H) and Tankers (T) do not require a Skills Road Test. Endorsements for H, T and X (Hazardous Material and Tankers) may not be obtained prior to the issuance of the appropriate CDL (Class A, B or C).

Note: If you fail the commercial driver knowledge test 6 times within a 12 month period, you will not be allowed to take the 7th test until 12 months after the 1st failed test. If you fail the commercial driver knowledge test, you must wait 72 hours before you are eligible to retest. Therefore, please ensure you have studied the commercial driver manual prior to taking test(s). Testing Time limits: CDL General Knowledge – 1 hour, CDL Endorsements – 40 minutes. Exceeding these time limits will result in a test failure.
