Replace a Driver License
If your driver license has been damaged, lost or stolen, you can obtain a duplicate driver license. The DMV makes obtaining a duplicate driver license convenient by offering the service online or at a DMV service location. For the online transaction, your unique driver license number, which is contained on previous DMV receipts or driver records, is necessary to maintain the security of your identity. If you visit a DMV service location to obtain a duplicate, a new digital photo will be taken.
The Patriot Act, Public Law 108-458, National Intelligence Reform Act of 2004 does NOT allow for social security numbers to be displayed on driver licenses or identification cards.
Bring the following documents with you and be prepared to pay the applicable fees.
- Completed Drivers License/Voter Registration Application [PDF]
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Proof of Current Residency (If Changed)
Note: If you are holding a provisional driver license, you please refer to provisional driver license replacement.
We regret that we cannot accept photocopies or scanned documents.
Non-US Citizens may obtain a duplicate driver license and renew their license at any DMV service location.
The Document Verification Guide will assist you with determining which documents you will need to collect and bring to DC DMV.
