Replace a Learner Permit
If your learner permit has been damaged, lost or stolen, you can obtain a duplicate learner permit. The DMV makes obtaining a duplicate learner permit convenient by offering the service online or at a DMV service location. For the online transaction, you must possess a DC REAL ID learner permit (star located in upper right corner) or Limited Purpose learner permit (which is marked not for official federal purposes). Your unique learner permit number, which is contained on previous DMV receipts or driver records, is necessary to maintain the security of your identity. If you visit a DMV service location to obtain a duplicate, be sure to review the requirements for in-person replacement learner permit as the document requirements have changed, and you will be need to bring additional items with you.
Click on all three (3) links below to review a list of required documents you must bring with you from each category and be prepared to pay the applicable fees. The DMV will NOT be able to accept documents that are not listed for source documents.
- Proof of Identity - full legal name and date of birth
- Proof of DC Residency
- Proof of Social Security Number (not applicable for replacing Limited Purpose learner permit)
To replace a learner permit, you may visit any service location except Adjudication Services, Brentwood Road Test Office and Inspection Station.
