Renew or Convert a Commercial Driver License

Renew a CDL

To renew your DC CDL you must visit the Brentwood Commercial Driver License Center. If your DC Commercial Driver License has been expired for more than 60 days, you must take and pass BOTH the knowledge and the road skills tests. You may renew your license six months prior to the expiration date; however, you may not operate a vehicle if your license is expired.

Effective January 30, 2012, you must be a US citizen or Non-US citizen with a valid Permanent Resident Card to obtain or renew your Commercial Driver License.   If you do not have proof of lawful permanent residency, but you are legally in the US under a program approved by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, then in accordance with federal law, we will issue a CDL that is marked as non-domiciled.

You must present the following original documents and pay applicable fees to renew your driver license in person.

  1. CDL Driver License Application
  2. CDL Supplemental Form
  3. A US Department of Transportation Medical Form and Card completed by a physician
  4. Current DC CDL
  5. Proof of US citizenship or lawful permanent residency.  Note:  If you do not have proof of lawful permanent residency, but you are legally in the US under a program approved by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), then in accordance with federal law, we will issue a CDL that is marked as non-domiciled.  You must provide proof of your USCIS status.
  6. Change of Name or Change of Address documentation, if applicable.

Convert a  CDL from Another State

If you do not have proof of lawful permanent residency, but you are lawfully in the US under a program approved by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, then in accordance with federal law, we will issue a CDL that is marked as non-domiciled.  To convert your out of state commercial driver license you must visit the Brentwood Commercial Driver License Center.
