How do I get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the first
time?
Note: Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a valid non-commercial driver's license.
The Patriot Act, Public Law 108-458, National Intelligence Reform
Act of 2004 does NOT allow for social security numbers to be displayed
on driver licenses or identification cards.
Obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit
Visit 1205 Brentwood Road NE to obtain a DC Commercial Driver's
License Manual to study for the knowledge test. You may also download a DC CDL Manual* online.
Obtain a Commercial Driver's License Learner's Permit. The
CDL Learner's Permit authorizes the driver to operate a designated
class of vehicles if accompanied by a driver licensed to operate
such vehicles.
Obtain a Commercial Driver's License
A DC commercial driver's license is valid for up to eight years for US citizens and may vary for non-US citizens (according to the US immigration expiration date).
Schedule a CDL road test by calling 311 or (202) 737-4404, 8:15 am
to 4 pm Monday- Friday. The road test is given at designated
DMV service locations with
test times starting between 7:30 am and 2:10 pm Monday-Friday.
You must be accompanied to the road test by a driver with a valid
CDL of the same class or higher. Please bring the following to
your appointment:
Valid DC Driver's License and CDL Learner's Permit
