Non-US Citizens may obtain a DC drivers license if they have a minimum of six (6) months duration of stay in the United States. The DC drivers license will expire with the US duration of stay.
Non-US Citizens with an INS Notice of Action may be issued a temporary DC drivers license or identification card for the duration of processing time indicated in the notice up to a maximum of 18 months.
Non-US Citizens with visitor VISA status are not eligible to obtain a drivers license in the District of Columbia.

Service Locations
To obtain a driver license, you may visit any service location except the Adjudication Services, Brentwood Road Test Office and Inspection Station. Steps
- Complete the Drivers License Application*
- Provide the required documents
- Take and pass the vision screening test
- Take and pass a knowledge
test and skills road test (if applicable).
- Pay the appropriate fees
- Obtain your DC driver license.
Note: Drivers under the age of 21 who are obtaining a driver license are automatically enrolled in the GRAD Program
