(Washington, DC) - DC DMV introduces its new vehicle inspection
category, "Pass with Warning." DMV's inspection process monitors
81 total items. Approximately 20% of vehicle failures are for minor
safety defects. By eliminating the re-inspection of these minor
defects, DMV can improve customer service significantly by reducing
overall vehicle inspection times, while still identifying safety
requirements for vehicle owners.
Vehicles that have only the minor defects will receive a valid inspection
sticker, but will also be provided a list of items requiring repair.
Such vehicles will not be required to return until their next regularly
scheduled 2-year inspection. The owners are still obligated to take action
to bring the vehicle into compliance. They will not be exempt from law
enforcement, nor will they be eligible for a second "Pass with Warning."
Additionally, to provide motorists with greater choice and flexibility,
DMV is expanding the authority of the vehicle inspection station
to include brake re-inspections. The inspection station will continue to
charge a re-inspection fee.
