Specialty Vehicle Tags

In addition to the regular vehicle tags, DC DMV offers several specialty tags.

DC DMV currently offers Anacostia River commemorative tags, pictured below, which are available for an extra fee. Funds collected for Anacostia River tags are used to restore and protect the Anacostia River.

To get Anacostia River tags, bring your (or the vehicle’s registered owners’) valid DC DMV driver license, learner permit, or identification card—and any existing vehicle tags you have—to a DC DMV service center. You can show your documentation, pay the fees, surrender the old tags, and get the new specialty tags there. Information on DC DMV service centers is available at the link below:

DC DMV offers Disabled American Veteran (DAV) tags to veterans with a passenger motor vehicle who are certified as a member of the District of Columbia Disabled American Veterans by the Commander of the District of Columbia Disabled American Veterans.  Normal registration fees apply for DAV tags.  However, veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability, as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs, may receive one set of tags (i.e., DAV, Veteran, passenger, etc) at no fee for a non-commercial vehicle.  Note the "no fee" is only applicable to annual registration fees.

DC DMV offers DC Veteran tags on behalf of the DC Office of Veteran Affairs (OVA). Specialty Veteran tags can only be used on passenger cars, pickup trucks, and vans.  There are additional fees other than registration fees for this specialty tag.  The application and display fees shall be deposited into the Office of Veterans Affairs Fund for use in servicing DC veterans.  Veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability, as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs, may receive one set of tags (i.e., DAV, Veteran, passenger, etc) at no fee for a non-commercial vehicle.  Note the "no fee" is only applicable to annual registration fees.  To get DC Veteran tags, you must provide proof of military service—a DD 214, WD AGO, or DD 256 form (honorably discharged)—and the DC driver license and DC vehicle registration of the vehicle’s registered owner to a DC DMV service center, at the link above.  The spouse of a veteran is also eligible for a DC Veteran tag with proof of the veterans honorably discharged military service documents (as previously listed), marriage certificate, military ID, DC driver license and DC vehicle registration.

NOTE: If you do not surrender your existing tags, you will be liable for any tickets that may be issued to your old tags.
