Change of Address

This section provides information to help you change the residence listed on your DC DMV driver license, non- driver identification card, and vehicle registration. DC DMV offers online or by mail options if you already have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, and an in-person option if you do not. A REAL ID credential has a star in the upper right hand corner; a Limited Purpose credential is marked “Not for Official Purposes.”

NOTE: You may not list a temporary address and/or PO Box as your residence.

You must update changes in address with DC DMV within 60 calendar days of a move to keep your records current.

Online
If you currently have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may change your address online.  You can update your address during online transactions by uploading the residency documents the system will ask you for.
The online system for DC DMV change of residence is available at the link below:

By Mail
If you currently have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose credential, you may change your address by mail.  Mail the necessary TWO proof of residency documents, a completed DC DMV driver application form, and the correct fee (more information below) to:

DC DMV
Attn: Change of Address
PO Box 90120
Washington, DC 20090

Information on the documents you will need to prove residency is available at the link below:

In Person
If you do not currently have a REAL ID or Limited Purpose credential, you must bring your TWO residency documents, completed driver application form (above), and fee payment (below) to a DC DMV service center location. You may also change your address on your REAL ID or Limited Purpose credential in person if you choose. Information on DC DMV service centers is available at the link below:

For a REAL ID credential, you will also have to bring additional original source documents to prove your identity, Social Security number, and District residency. Information on the documents you must provide is available at the links below:

  • REAL ID Proof of Identity
  • REAL ID Proof of Social Security number
  • Proof of Current District Residency (2 required)

For a Limited Purpose credential, you will also have to bring additional original source documents to prove your identity, Social Security status, and District residency. Information on the documents you must provide is available at the links below:

  • Limited Purpose Proof of Identity
  • Social Security Number Declaration
  • Proof of Current District Residency (2 required)

Fees
If you are not completing another transaction at the same time, such as renewing your driver license or vehicle registration, there is also a change of address fee. Information on DC DMV fees is available at the link below:

  • DC DMV Fees

The address change will be applied to your driver license or identification card and your vehicle registrations. For vehicles with co-owners, the change of address will only be applicable to the primary owner. If there is a District co-owner on the vehicle registration, that individual must apply for his or her own change of address.

Failure to update your address with DC DMV may make us unable to send you inspection, license, and vehicle registration renewals, ticket notices, license suspensions/revocations, and other pertinent DC DMV documents. As a result, you may experience inconveniences and fees.
