Real ID Early Renewals

Beginning October 1, 2021, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require that every air traveler age 18 and older, have a REAL ID compliant Driver License, Identification Card, or another acceptable form of identification to fly within the United States.

If your credential expires on or after October 1, 2021, you may be eligible to renew early and obtain the federally-compliant REAL ID credential. An appointment is required for the early renewal revalidation process and the renewal fee will be reduced to give you credit for the remaining time on your current credential.

If you possess another acceptable travel document, you have the option to renew your DC Driver License/ID Card prior to October 1, 2021. Your current credential will remain valid until expiration, if you choose not to renew early, but it will not be accepted by TSA for the purpose of travel by air. When your credential expires, you will be required to revalidate and become REAL ID compliant. Please let us know if you plan to Opt-Out of early renewal.

It is important to know what documents to COLLECT and BRING with you so you can SECURE your new REAL ID Driver License or REAL ID Identification Card.

The Real ID Core categories that you’ll need to re-verify who you are and where you live.

  1. Proof of Identity and Lawful Presence
  2. Proof of Social Security Number
  3. Proof of Current DC Residency

Renewals will require you to bring specific documents as proof of identity, proof of lawful presence, proof of social security number, and two (2) proofs of current DC residency to your appointment. All proof documents must be original and be in the same name or you must provide additional documentation (i.e., marriage license, divorce order, name change court order, etc.) showing the name change. Any medical condition indicated on the Driver License Application OR disability that may alter normal driving will require a DC DMV Medical/Eye Report.  If you are 70 years or older, you must also have the Mature Driver Certification section completed on the Driver License Application.

Be sure to use DC DMV's online Document Verification Guide to determine what documents you need to obtain a REAL ID credential. The online guide can be accessed by clicking the link below:

Once you have completed the Document Verification Guide and collected your documents, you are now ready to schedule an early renewal appointment.

NOTE: Appointments are ONLY for individuals that are not REAL ID compliant AND expire on or after October 1, 2021. If you do not meet these requirements, your appointment will not be honored.
