About the DMV

The District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicle's mission is to promote public safety by ensuring the safe operation of motor vehicles.

DMV provides service to over 541,000 licensed drivers/identification card holders and 288,000 registered vehicles at four service centers.  We provide adjudication services and collect ticket payments for more than 2.5 million tickets annually.  We also conduct over 189,000 annual vehicle inspections.  DMV interacts with DC residents and non-residents, with an average of 3,200 daily customer contacts—more than almost any other District government agency.

To achieve our mission, we have three operational program areas as indicated below:

Adjudication Services

Provide ticket processing, noticing, hearing and hearing support services to residents and non-residents, in order to render legally sound decisions on parking, photo and moving violations, and to ensure proper processing of violation and penalty payments for those infractions.

Note: DC DMV does not issue tickets.  Parking, photo enforcement, and minor moving violation tickets are issued by officers of the Department of Public Works (DPW), the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT), and law enforcement agencies, including: the Metropolitan Police Department, US Capitol Police, US Park Police, and other organizations.

Driver Services

Provide driver certification and identification services to residents to ensure they have the proper credentials to reflect identity, residence, and driving qualifications so they may legally operate their vehicles.

Vehicle Services

Provide certification and inspection services to residents, businesses, and government entities so they may legally park, drive, and sell their vehicles in the District of Columbia.

These program areas provide the following services:

  • Driver Services - Driver License, Learner Permit, Provisional Driver License, Commercial Driver License
  • Vehicle Services - Vehicle Registration, Inspection, Titles, Tags, Parking Permits / Reciprocity Stickers, Disability Tags and Placards, Buying and Selling a Vehicle
  • Adjudication – Schedule Moving Violation Hearings, Schedule Driver License Hearings, Schedule Walk-in Parking Hearings, Boot & Tow Payments, Ticket Payments
