Driving Restrictions for Specific Medical Conditions*

Medical Condition Driving Restriction
Arthritis in lower extremities Automatic transmission
Deaf Left outside mirror properly placed
Deaf/hearing impaired Hearing aids
Insulin-dependent Diabetic Insulin-dependent diabetic; noted on license
Doctor’s Recommendation No driving during rush hours
Little Person Appropriate elevation of seat and use of floor pedal extensions
Missing fingers or a hand Automatic transmission, Spinner knob for steering wheel and Turn signal switch lever - Hand Extension
Missing right/left arm extremity Automatic transmission, Spinner knob for steering wheel and Turn signal switch lever - Hand Extension
Missing right extremity Left foot accelerator
Missing right leg Automatic transmission left foot accelerator
Respiratory problems Must use portable oxygen when driving
Vision Two outside mirrors properly placed
Vision Daylight driving only
Vision Must wear glasses or contact lenses
Vision Biopic/Telescopic lens, according to doctor’s recommendation

*DC DMV's Director has the authority to require additional restrictions based on safety requirements. 

A restriction can only be removed if you provide an updated Medical/Eye Report with the appropriate findings by your medical professional and must be submitted on your medical professionals letterhead, with the exception of the Corrective Lenses Restriction which has separate requirements (for Corrective Lenses Restriction removal, visit dmv.dc.gov/service/screening-vision).
