DC DMV Limited Purpose Driver License

The DC DMV Limited Purpose driver license allows District residents who cannot provide a Social Security number to drive legally. To be eligible for a DC DMV Limited Purpose driver license, you cannot have a current Social Security number. Specifically, you:

  • Must never have been issued a Social Security number, OR
  • May have previously been issued a Social Security number, but must be currently unable to establish legal presence in the US, OR
  • Must not be eligible for a Social Security number.

The Limited Purpose credential requires a one-time validation of source documents when applying for your DC Limited Purpose credential. The driver knowledge and road skills tests will be required for all applicants applying for the Limited Purpose driver license. The DC DMV Limited Purpose driver license cannot be used as a federal identification or for federal identification card purposes. It is valid for 8 years.
