CMV Group and CDL Class and Endorsements

To get a DC DMV CDL, you must take the CDL knowledge test, and based on the CDL you want to obtain and the CMV(s) you plan to drive, you may need to take additional test(s) to add specific endorsements to your CDL or remove restrictions.

CMV Groups

Description

 Group A Any vehicle with a semi-trailer or trailer with two or more axles. This group also includes any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 26,000 pounds, provided that the gross vehicle weight rating of the towed vehicle is in excess of 10,000 pounds. 
 Group B Any heavy straight vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 26,000 pounds, as well as any vehicle towing another vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds. 
 Group C Any vehicle that is designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or is used in the transportation of materials classified as hazardous in the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act.

 S – School Bus
 P – Passenger
 P – No Passengers in CMV Bus
 When CLP Endorsement is P and Vehicle Class is B  M – No Class A Passenger Vehicle
 When CLP Endorsement is P and Vehicle Class is C  N – No Class A and Class B Passenger Vehicles

Note: A CDL learner permit (CLP) can have only the following endorsements (with additional restrictions): S – School Bus and P – Passenger.

 Class B Eligible to drive any Group B vehicle
 Class C Eligible to drive any Group C vehicle

 H (Hazardous Materials) Truck carrying hazardous materials
 T (Double / Triple Trailer) Truck with double or triple trailers
 N (Tank) Truck with a tank
 P (Passenger) Passenger vehicle designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the operator
 S (School Bus)  Operating a school bus with passengers
 X (Combination) Combines the N and H endorsements for a single endorsement allowing operation of a truck with a tank or truck carrying hazardous materials
