If you received a moving violation ticket in the District, then you may be eligible to attend a DC DMV-approved online defensive driving course to have the points removed from your driving record. An online course can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for your convenience. You must get prior approval from a DC DMV hearing examiner at your moving violation hearing to take an online course for point removal.
Once approved by a DC DMV hearing examiner, you have 15 calendar days from the hearing decision to pay the ticket violation. You must successfully complete the online course 30 calendar days from the hearing decision to qualify for a removal of points.
The course provider will inform DC DMV that you passed the course. DC DMV will notify you that we have received your course certification and that your points have been removed.
If your DC DMV driver license has been expired for more than 365 days, then you may also take one of the approved online DC DMV traffic school courses as a substitute to retaking the knowledge test. If you choose this option, you must wait to receive your traffic school certification in the mail, and then take it to a DC DMV service center location to renew your driver license. If your DC driver license has been expired for more than 545 days, you must take and pass both the knowledge test and the road skills test (by appointment only). More information on the road skills test is available at the link below:
You may also take an online course to avoid insurance premium increases or to refresh and enhance your driving knowledge and skills. Please check with your own vehicle insurance provider prior to taking the course to ensure they will reduce your insurance rates if you complete the course
