To Get a Trip Permit

If your vehicle travels into and through the District of Columbia and meets the criteria for an apportioned vehicle, you must display an apportioned tag or secure a trip permit before entering the District. Motor carriers, chartered buses, chartered shuttle buses, and other vehicles that fall under the definition of apportionable vehicles, but are not apportioned or fully registered in the District of Columbia, may obtain a trip permit for a fee, if required. If your vehicle is not in compliance, the owner/operator is subject to a $500 fine.

More information on the DC DMV fees is available at: DC DMV Fees.

Online

Any DC DMV-registered business can get a trip permit online.

Note: You must use Internet Explorer when trying to access the trip permit website.

Eligible Transactions

If you are a registered commercial carrier, you can use the DC DMV Trip Permit website to do the following: Skip the Trip Logo

  • Request a trip permit
  • Revise a trip permit request

Businesses that provide information and payment online may print the trip permit after completing the online transaction. Your copy of the trip permit will be delivered to the email address you provide.

A business may request a trip permit online but choose not to pay online. If you choose this option (to defer payment), then you will be required to send a check or money order along with the confirmation receipt you receive at the end of the transaction to:
