DC DMV offers three types of personalized vehicle tags:
- Standard (for automobiles): May contain up to 7 letters, the numbers 1 through 9 and/or spaces
- Motorcycle: May contain up to 5 letters, the numbers 1 through 9 and/or spaces
- Disability: May contain up to 5 letters, the numbers 1 through 9 and/or spaces
Only DC registered vehicle owners can request personalized tags online, by mail or in person.
Note: Per District law, personalized tags cannot be issued to vehicles registered to business or government entities. No punctuations or symbols are permitted on DC DMV personalized tags. DC DMV reserves the right to reject any combination of letters or numbers that may be deemed offensive.
Once you submit the personalized tag request, it cannot be changed or cancelled. There is a non-refundable reservation fee of $100.
A personalized tag request may take up to eight weeks. You will receive a letter and an email notice when your personalized tag is available for pick-up.

Mail or In Person
When you apply for a personalized tag online, by mail or in person, you will have to pay the applicable fee for the tag.
If you apply for personalized tags online, you can track your request online.
If your request is rejected, your reservation fee will be refunded. If your application is approved, DC DMV will contact you by mail or email notice.
You may pick up your personalized tags ONLY at DC DMV's Southwest Service Center location.
To pick up your personalized tags, you must bring the following items:
- Your DC DMV issued credential
- Your DC DMV vehicle registration card
- Your current DC DMV vehicle tags
Note: Your personalized tags will NOT be issued until receipt of the current DC DMV vehicle tags and registration card.
