Excise Tax Exemptions List

Please find attached categories of vehicles that are exempt from DC Government's excise tax. The information is merely an aid. More complete and up-to-date information is available under the DC Code 50.

[NEW] As a result of recent regulatory changes due to the Motor Excise Tax Amendment Act of 2024, DC DMV has revised the calculations for motor vehicle excise taxes. Effective Monday, February 17, 2025, DC DMV's system will automatically calculate the vehicle excise tax based on the excise tax formula.
