Due to the Code Purple Air Quality Alert, DC DMV closed its Inspection Station, located at 1001 Half Street SW at 10 am. Customers who planned to visit the inspection station today because their inspection stickers are expiring will be given a five-calendar day extension to renew. DC DMV’s Service Centers will remain open during normal business hours. Many of DC DMV services can be completed online or via the mobile app, allowing customers to “skip-the-trip.”

On February 5, the Georgetown DMV Service Center experienced a significant water main break. Due to flooding impacts, the Georgetown DMV Service Center will remain closed to the public until further notice. DC DMV's services will remain available at our other locations, online and via our mobile app.

Legal Defenses to Photo Tickets

If you want to contest your photo tickets, there are certain defenses you can offer. The Automated Traffic Enforcement Act, DC Code §50-2209.01 et. seq. provides the following information. DC Code §50-2209.02(a) provides that absent a crime or fraud the owner of the vehicle is liable for payment of the fine assessed for the infraction. DC Code §50-2209.02(d) provides that the owner is presumed not liable when:

  1. Yielding the right of way to an emergency vehicle.
  2. The vehicle or tags have been stolen prior to the violation.
  3. Part of a funeral procession; or
  4. Following the direction of a law enforcement officer.
