(WASHINGTON, DC) – Effective Tuesday, June 26, 2018, District residents who complete a driver license or identification card application at the District of Columbia’s Department of Motor Vehicles will automatically be opted in to register to vote unless they select to decline. This new requirement is in accordance with B21-194, the Automatic Voter Registration Amendment Act of 2015.
With the new automatic voter registration process in place, DC DMV expects that transactions which require the driver license or identification card application will take longer and asks for customers to be patient during the process.
Additionally, DC DMV issues REAL ID credentials and encourages customers to plan ahead and “Know Before You Go.” To obtain a REAL ID driver license or identification card, residents must visit a service center in-person and provide:
• One Proof of Identity;
• One Proof of Social Security Number, and
• Two Proofs of DC Residency.
To support organ and tissue donation for people in the Washington, DC community, District residents have the option to make a donation to DonateLifeDC with any online or in-person transaction in which DC DMV collects money. DonateLifeDC is an organ donor registry that supports organ and tissue donation.
