-We are experiencing a system error that is causing duplicate refund checks to be issued to some DMV customers erroneously. If you have been affected by the glitch, to quickly resolve this matter please deposit or cash one check and destroy the other. If you attempt to cash the second check, it will not be honored by the bank.
We apologize to all DMV customers for the inconvenience as we diligently work to rectify this issue.

-DC DMV will no longer prevent DC residents from applying for a new or renewed driver license because of failing to meet the requirements of the Clean Hands Law.

Non-Commercial Driver License (NCDL) Third Party Road Test Program

To provide an option to those who need to take the road test sooner than an in-house appointment is available, DC DMV offers third party testing for the non-commercial driver license (NCDL) road test. (Note: The third party tester program is not available for the Commercial Driver License (CDL) road test.)

All third party testers are trained and certified by DC DMV. They are qualified driving instructors who are associated with an approved District driving school. If you receive driver education, either classroom, on the road training or both, from a driving school, then they are not allowed to also administer your third party road test.  In this case, you must either take your road test in-house using DC DMV personnel or use the services of another third party tester at another District driving school.

The requirements for taking the road test administered by a third party tester are the same as the road test administered by DC DMV personnel. These requirements consist of when you are eligible to take the road test (for GRAD permit holders seeking to obtain a provisional license), the number of times you may take the test, the vehicle requirements, cancellation requirements/fees and the necessary items.  All third party road tests must begin and end at the DC DMV road test facility during normal hours of operations.  The third party road tests also follow the existing DC DMV road test routes and use the same scoring sheet. Once your third party road test is completed, you will be processed at the road test facility by DC DMV personnel.

All third party testers are responsible for scheduling their own road tests and setting their own road test fees for an amount not to exceed $100. There may be additional fees for the use of their vehicle, if applicable. You should contact the third party tester directly for scheduling and fee information.

Below is a list of the District driving school which currently has driving instructors certified to administer the District’s road test:

Note: If you have an in-house DC DMV road test appointment scheduled, but you choose to use the services of a third party tester, please remember to cancel your DC DMV appointment.
