Tag Transfer

You may transfer valid tags from one vehicle to another, as long as the vehicles have the same owner. If the vehicle tags are expired, you may not transfer them.

When you transfer your current tags to a different used or new vehicle a new title and registration is generated for the next vehicle.  One of the benefits of transferring tags is to allow you to use the money you have already spend on your vehicle registration on the registration for the new vehicle.  If you choose not to transfer valid tags to your new vehicle, you may forfeit some or all of the remaining registration fees on the vehicle you are junking or selling.

To transfer your tags, you must go to a DC DMV service center with the following documents for the vehicle to which you are transferring the tags:

  • A current vehicle registration
  • A current vehicle title
  • A valid vehicle inspection
  • A valid DC vehicle insurance policy

You must also have a valid DC DMV driver license or learner permit.
