Starting June 1, 2017, DC DMV began issuing a new driver license and identification card with the same look; however, the jurisdiction will be Washington, DC. All existing credentials are valid until the expiration date.

Starting June 6, 2017, the Inspection Station is operating on Spring/Summer hours.

Personalized Tags

DC DMV offers 3 types of personalized vehicle tags:

  • Standard (for automobiles): May contain up to 7 letters, the numbers 1 through 9, and/or spaces
  • Motorcycle: May contain up to 5 letters, the numbers 1 through 9, and/or spaces
  • Disability: May contain up to 5 letters, the numbers 1 through 9, and/or spaces

No punctuation or symbols are permitted on DC DMV personalized tags. DC DMV reserves the right to reject any combination of letters or numbers that may be deemed offensive. Please review your personalized tag order. Once you accept this order, you cannot change or cancel it. A non-refundable reservation fee of $100 is due when the order is placed. 

A personalized tag request may take up to 8 weeks to fulfill. You will receive a letter in the mail when your personalized tag is available for pick-up. DC DMV will email you if you have provided your email address.

You—if you are the registered owner of the vehicle—can request personalized tags online, by mail, or in person.  NOTE:  Per District law, personalized tags cannot be issued to vehicles registered to business or government entities.

By Mail or In Person
Mail or bring a completed personalized tag application, available at the link below, to DC DMV’s  95 M Street SW service center. You can also call 311 or (202) 737-4404 to request an application form to be mailed to you.

When you apply for a personalized tag online, by mail, or in person, you will have to pay the applicable fee for the tag. DC Government accepts Visa and MasterCard credit cards. DC Government does not accept Discover or American Express credit cards.

DC DMV will contact you via US mail or email, if you provided your email address, to let you know if your request has been approved or rejected.

If your request is rejected, you will be refunded the applicable fees.

If your application is approved, DC DMV will contact you by US mail or email (if you provided your email address) when your personalized tags are ready, in approximately 8 weeks.

You may pick up your personalized tags at DC DMV's 95 M Street SW service location.

To pick up your personalized tags, you must bring the following items:

  • Your DC DMV driver license, learner permit, or identification card
  • Your DC vehicle registration card

AND

  • Your current vehicle tags

NOTE: You must surrender any current vehicle tags and registration card. You will be issued a new vehicle registration card that corresponds to the personalized tags.
