Selling a Vehicle

Ready to sell your vehicle? Follow these important steps to sell your vehicle in the District:

  1. Remove your license tags from the vehicle.
  2. If you do not plan to transfer your vehicle tags, surrender the tags to DC DMV either in-person or by certified mail to ensure that DC DMV receives your surrendered vehicle tags.

Notes:

  • You may be deemed liable for any traffic violations while your tags remain on the car.
  • Do not cancel your insurance before surrendering your tags to DC DMV. If you cancel your vehicle insurance first, then you will have to pay an insurance lapse fee.
  1. Provide the new owner with the properly signed title.
  2. The buyer will need to visit a DC DMV service center to obtain a temporary DC registration to take the vehicle through inspection.
