To obtain taxicab tags in the District of Columbia, you must complete the following steps.
Step 1 – Obtain the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) One Stop Form [PDF]
Step 2 – Report to your insurance company to have your agent complete the appropriate section for insurance verification.
Step 3 – Pass a “for hire” DC DMV vehicle inspection. Once the vehicle passes inspection, the DFHV One Stop Form must be stamped by an inspector at the inspection station.
Note: All “for hire” vehicles must be inspected, including new vehicles.
Step 4 – Return to DFHV office for final approval. When you return to the DFHV office, the DFHV One Stop Form must be signed and sealed by authorized DFHV personnel only.
Step 5 – Report to any DC/DMV service center to title and register your vehicle.

Who’s Qualified?
- District of Columbia license holders who possess a valid DFHV Face ID Card
- Out-of-state license holders who possess a valid DFHV Face ID Card and have had a “for hire” vehicle registered in DC on or before March 31, 2006 (these license holders are considered grandfathered)
- Out-of-state license holders who possess a valid DFHV Face ID Card and are co-owners of a vehicle with a District cab company
Note: An out-of-state license holder who owns/co-owns and operates any “for hire” vehicle in the District of Columbia is now allowed to be a registered owner of the vehicle (i.e., he or she can be put on the registration and in these cases make the driver the primary owner).
In addition, due to a DFHV moratorium, DFHV is not issuing any new H (for hire) tags until further notice.
Step 6 – Title and register, vehicle. DC DMV will issue an H tag.
