-We are experiencing a system error that is causing duplicate refund checks to be issued to some DMV customers erroneously. If you have been affected by the glitch, to quickly resolve this matter please deposit or cash one check and destroy the other. If you attempt to cash the second check, it will not be honored by the bank.
We apologize to all DMV customers for the inconvenience as we diligently work to rectify this issue.

-DC DMV will no longer prevent DC residents from applying for a new or renewed driver license because of failing to meet the requirements of the Clean Hands Law.

DC DMV Service Update as of June 22, 2021

Tuesday, June 22, 2021

The DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) Service Centers and Adjudication Services will return to walk-in service beginning the week of July 19, 2021. DC DMV will honor all appointments made through Saturday, July 17, 2021, but none will be available after that date. In addition, two DC DMV locations will have special weekend hours to accommodate residents.

In-person service becomes available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Adjudication Services starting Monday, July 19, 2021, and at all DMV Service Centers starting Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Scheduling road tests for commercial and noncommercial driver licenses will remain by appointment only.

Tips for Using DC DMV Services

  • Determine if you can “Skip the Trip”: Most necessary services are available online, by mail, and through the DC DMV mobile app. For example, renewals for vehicle registration are only available through those methods—they are not conducted in-person.
  • Use the online Document Verification Guide: If residents do need in-person services, this tool walks through the various documents needed to complete driver license, identification card, or vehicle transactions to ensure they have what they need before arriving at a DC DMV location.
  • Check location hours: Go to dmv.dc.gov or call 311 for days and hours of operation to specific locations before making an in-person trip.

The following requirements took effect on June 1, 2021:

  • All District-registered vehicles must display valid registration and inspection stickers to avoid penalties and enforcement. Registration renewals are not eligible for in-person transactions. Renew online, on the DC DMV App, or by mail. Vehicle inspection is available on a first come, first service basis.
  • Any registration renewed with an RPP request on or after June 1 will be subject to new tiered RPP fees.
  • Any ticket issued after June 1 will be subject to adjudication hearing timelines listed on the back of the ticket. Tickets issued between January 1, 2020 - May 31, 2021 are still eligible for adjudication and payment of the original fine until September 30, 2021.

The following requirement took effect on September 9:

  • All expired DC driver licenses and ID Cards to be renewed before September 9, 2021.
  • After September 9, 2021, if your DC DMV driver license has been expired for more than 365 days, you must take and pass the knowledge test or take the District's online traffic school course to waive taking the knowledge test.
  • If your DC driver license has been expired for more than 545 days, you must take and pass both the knowledge test and the road skills test (by appointment only).
