DC DMV offers a digital registration card, free of charge, for those individuals who want the ability to maintain an up-to-date version of their registration sticker and card on their smartphone. The digital registration is part of DMV's mobile application and is available to iOS and Android users. Once the app is loaded to your phone, you will be able to use it to show real-time proof of vehicle registration to anyone who requests it, including law enforcement.
The digital vehicle registration sticker and card are designed to look like the existing paper products you are currently issued to keep in your possession and stick on your windshield. Pertinent information, such as Name and Address of Registered Owner, Year, Make, Model, Weight, VIN and Tag number of the vehicle, as well as residential parking permit (RPP) and reciprocity, is included in the barcode of the digital registration card.
The digital vehicle registration card contains unique features to let you know about the vehicle registration status. A Green Borderline moves around the vehicle registration card when the registration is valid; a Yellow Borderline moves around the vehicle registration card when the registration is about to expire; a Red Borderline moves around the vehicle registration card when the registration is suspended; and a Black Borderline moves around the vehicle registration card when the registration is expired.
DC DMV is continuing to issue the paper vehicle registration cards and stickers, in addition to offering the digital vehicle registration card and sticker. Both the paper and digital registration cards are valid DC DMV documents.
