Intelligent Speed Assistance

What is ISA?

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is a vehicle safety technology that helps drivers maintain the correct speed limit. It uses a combination of global positioning system (GPS) data, speed limit maps, and sometimes camera-based speed sign recognition to monitor a vehicle's speed and alert or intervene when a driver exceeds the limit. ISA systems can range from simple alerts to active speed control that restricts the vehicle's speed. There are two types of ISA systems: passive and active.

  • Passive is an audible or visual warning that alerts the driver via monitoring screen when the vehicle is over the posted speed limit.
  • Active utilizes real-time technology to prevent speeding above the posted limit or above a fixed speed by restricting the accelerator’s engagement.

The Intelligent Speed Assistance Program is an initiative which carries an imposed driving restriction and the required installation of an intelligent speed assistance device in response to drivers that have been charged with aggravated reckless driving. The ISA Program will monitor drivers’ compliance with required intelligent speed assistance system installation through program enrollment for the duration of a specified term period.
