You must have a valid DC drivers license or identification card to renew your vehicle registration.
By Mail Registration Renewal
If you receive a paper registration renewal notice by mail, it will include a list of all applicable registration related fees and a return envelope. To renew by mail, follow the instructions and be sure to enclose payment (cash will not be accepted).
If you receive a registration renewal notice by e-mail and you choose to renew your registration by mail, you should send your registration payment (cash will not be accepted), including any inspection and ticket fees, to the address below:
DC Department of Motor Vehicles
Vehicle Services Administration
P.O. Box 90120
Washington, DC 20090
NOTE: Your tag number must be included on your payment type to ensure the correct vehicle registration is renewed.
If, after you receive an e-mailed registration renewal notice, you are unsure of the total registration fees, you can wait until you receive a paper registration renewal notice by mail, which will contain all registration related fees.
If you have a change of address or a name change, you cannot renew your registration by mail. You must visit a DMV service location with the proper documentation to verify the changes.
Since it normally takes ten (10) business days to process a mailed registration renewal, please allow sufficient time prior to mailing your renewal. Your renewed registration card and sticker will be sent to you, at your DMV address of record, by return mail.
