IRP Apportioned Fee Calculations

The cost of a DC DMV-awarded IRP apportioned tag depends on the percentage of miles traveled in each IRP jurisdiction, the registered combined gross weight of the vehicle and other vehicle-specific criteria. Licensing fees can only be determined after processing a completed application.

The chart below is a simplified example showing how fees are calculated for renewals. It assumes a carrier travels 25,000 actual miles each in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. The vehicle is a Haul-for-Hire truck with a gross weight of 80,000 pounds.

State Mileage Percent    Full Year Fee   Apportioned Fee
DC 25,000 25% X $2325.00 = $581.25
DE 25,000 25% X $1390.00 = $347.50
MD 25,000 25% X $1280.00 = $320.00
VA 25,000 25% X $1328.00 = $332.00
Total 100,000 100%       $1580.75

Explanation

  • State: The jurisdiction where the vehicle traveled.
  • Mileage: The actual miles traveled in each jurisdiction.
  • Percentage: The percentage of the total mileage traveled in each jurisdiction.
  • Apportioned Fee: The calculated fee based on the proportion of miles traveled in each jurisdiction.

This table shows the breakdown of the fees as calculated based on the mileage and the full year fee for each state, resulting in a total apportioned fee of $1580.75.
