Obtain an Intrastate CDL

DC DMV offers an intrastate CDL that allows drivers to operate CMVs only within the District of Columbia.

To get a DC DMV intrastate CDL, you must be at least 18 years old, you must have a valid NCDL, you must have at least 2 years of driving experience, and you must have a good driving history.

To get a DC DMV intrastate CDL, you must follow all other requirements and steps for obtaining a regular CDL, including eligibility, documentation, testing, and payment of fees, all of which are explained on the pages listed below:

A DC DMV intrastate CDL has certain restrictions:

  • You may operate CMV Class C vehicles only.
  • You may not get endorsements for H (Hazardous Materials), N (Tank), P (Passenger), S (School Bus), and T (Double/Triple Trailer) CMV classes.
