Specialty Vehicle Tags
In addition to the regular vehicle tags, DC DMV offers several specialty tags.
Anacostia River Commemorative Tags
DC DMV currently offers Anacostia River commemorative tags, pictured below, which are available for an extra fee. Funds collected for Anacostia River tags are used to restore and protect the Anacostia River.
To get Anacostia River tags, bring your (or the vehicle’s registered owners’) valid DC DMV driver license, learner permit, or identification card—and any existing vehicle tags you have—DC DMV Service Center. You can show your documentation, pay the fees, surrender the old tags, and get the new specialty tags there.
Bicycle Awareness Tags
DC DMV now offers Bicycle Awareness tags to enhance motorists' awareness of bicycles. District residents obtaining Bicycle Awareness tags will pay a one-time application fee of $25 and a yearly display fee of $20. Both the application and yearly display fee will be deposited into the Vision Zero Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Fund.
Breast Cancer Awareness Tags
DC DMV offers Breast Cancer Awareness tags, pictured below. The initial cost of the tag is $45, as there is a $25 application fee and a yearly display fee of $20. The application fee and display fee will be deposited in the Community Health Financing Fund to support the promotion of breast cancer prevention and treatment.
To obtain the Breast Cancer Awareness tag, bring your (or the vehicle’s registered owners’) valid DC DMV driver license, learner permit, or identification card—and any existing vehicle tags you have for the vehicle in which you want to place the specialty tags on—to any one of DC DMV's four Service Centers. You will need to show your documentation, pay the fees, and surrender your current tags in order to receive the new specialty tag.
DC Veteran Tags
DC DMV offers DC Veteran tags on behalf of the DC Office of Veteran Affairs (OVA). Specialty Veteran tags can only be used on passenger cars, pickup trucks, and vans. There are additional fees other than registration fees for this specialty tag. The application and display fees shall be deposited into the Office of Veterans Affairs Fund for use in servicing DC veterans. Veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability, as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs letter indicating "Total and Permanent", may receive one set of tags (i.e., DAV, Veteran, passenger, etc) at no fee for a non-commercial vehicle. Note the "no fee" is only applicable to annual registration fees. To get DC Veteran tags, you must provide proof of military service—a DD 214, WD AGO, or DD 256 form (honorably discharged)—and the DC driver license and DC vehicle registration of the vehicle’s registered owner to a DC DMV service center, at the link above. The spouse of a veteran is also eligible for a DC Veteran tag with proof of the veterans honorably discharged military service documents (as previously listed), marriage certificate, military ID, DC driver license and DC vehicle registration.
DC Woman Veteran Tag
- Proof of military service—a DD 214, WD AGO, or DD 256 form.
- Discharge typed accepted—Honorable, General, and Other Than Honorable.
- DC Driver License.
- DC vehicle registration of the vehicle’s registered owner to a DC DMV service center.
- The $25 application fee and $10 annual display fee shall be deposited in the Office of Veterans Affairs Fund, established by section 705 of the Office of Veterans Affairs Establishment Act of 2001, effective October 3, 2001 (DC Law 14-28; DC Official Code § 49-1004).
- Veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability, as determined and evidenced in an official letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs, shall not be charged the application fee, registration fee or renewal fee for one set of tags. This does not apply to commercial vehicles
Disabled American Veteran (DAV) Tags
DC DMV offers Disabled American Veteran (DAV) tags to veterans with a passenger motor vehicle who are certified as a member of the District of Columbia Disabled American Veterans by the Commander of the District of Columbia Disabled American Veterans. Normal registration fees apply for DAV tags. However, veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability, as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs letter indicating "Total and Permanent", may receive one set of tags (i.e., DAV, Veteran, passenger, etc) at no fee for a non-commercial vehicle. Note the "no fee" is only applicable to annual registration fees. To receive the Disabled American Veteran Tag with symbolyou must provide the authorization letter from Veterans Affairs as well as an approved DC DMV Disability Tag/Placard application.
Washington Capitals Tags
DC DMV now offers Washington Capitals tags in support of the Washington Capitals hockey team and their 2018 Stanley Cup win. District residents obtaining Washington Capitals tags will pay a one-time application fee of $25 and a yearly display fee of $20. Both the application and yearly display fee will be deposited in the General Fund of the District of Columbia.
Washington Mystics Tags
DC DMV now offers Washington Mystics tags in support of the Washington Mystics basketball team and their 2019 Women’s National Basketball Association Championship win. District residents obtaining Washington Mystics tags will pay a one-time application fee of $25 and a yearly display fee of $20. Both the application and yearly display fee will be deposited in the General Fund of the District of Columbia.
Veterans Specialty Tags
District of Columbia veterans will be able to purchase Veterans Specialty tags from DC DMV. The tags include separate designs and emblems for each branch of the US Armed Forces including:
- Army
- Navy
- Marines
- Air Force
- Coast Guard
The specialty tags are available at all DC DMV service centers. Veterans will pay a one-time application fee of $52 for the specialty tag, and a yearly display fee of $26. Both the application and yearly display fee will be donated to the Office of Veterans Affairs Fund.
Note: If you do not surrender your existing tags, you will be liable for any tickets that may be issued to your old tags.
