If your District driver license, full license with conditions, or provisional license has been damaged, lost, or stolen, you can get a duplicate license either online, by mail, or at a DC DMV service center.
To get a duplicate online, you must have either a valid DC DMV REAL ID driver license full license with conditions, or provisional license (with a star printed in the upper right corner) or a valid Limited Purpose ID driver license, full license with conditions, or provisional license. DC DMV complies with federal regulations regarding the use of credit cards, so to utilize the online services and pay with a credit card, use browsers with mimimum version requirements, such as:
- Mozilla Firefox 27, released in 2014
- Safari 7, released in 2013
- Internet Explorer 11, released in 2013
- Google Chrome 22, released in 2012
- iOS 5, released in 2011.
To get your duplicate REAL ID or Limited Purpose license online, you will need your unique driver license number. You should be able to find your driver license number on previous DC DMV receipts or other driver records.
If you are obtaining a duplicate license due to a name change, then you must change your name on your Social Security card first. More information about changing your name is available at the link below:

If you do not have either a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose driver license, you will have to update your license, in person, at a DC DMV service center.
You will also need additional documentation proving your identity, residency, and Social Security number (for a REAL ID driver license) or declaration indicating you do not have a Social Security number (for a Limited Purpose driver license).
