Replace a REAL ID or Limited Purpose Driver License

If your District driver license, full license with conditions or provisional license has been damaged, lost or stolen, you can get a duplicate credential either online, by mail or at a DC DMV service center. If you request your REAL ID or Limited Purpose driver license replacement by mail, it will be processed within 7–10 business days from receipt and sent only to the address associated with your credential. Please allow up to 15 business days to receive your product before contacting DC DMV.

Note: If you are obtaining a duplicate license due to a name change, then you must change your name on your Social Security card first.

Use DC DMV's online Document Verification Guide to determine what documents you need to provide to DC DMV to obtain a duplicate driver license.

Online

DC DMV complies with federal regulations regarding the use of credit cards, so to utilize the online services and pay with a credit card, use browsers with minimum version requirements, such as:

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Apple Safari

To get your duplicate REAL ID or Limited Purpose license online, you will need your unique driver license number. You should be able to find your driver license number on previous DC DMV receipts or other driver records.
